Sitting here I decide to see if I can't improve my current dismal mood by looking at "Grognardia" which points out Squadron Books' Down in the Dungeon. Monster Brains has a far more complete writeup, with all pictures available at the equivalent Flickr gallery. The general thematic feel is as if a very young John Jakes had tried writing Lord of the Rings, after a late night bender spent watching Star Wars.

These are either some of the worst fantasy illustrations ever or the most fuckin' AWESOME or very probably both. Had I only seen this in the 80s I am sure that it would rank way up there with the Fiend Folio, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain and Alexander Nevsky as things which would forever change how I saw fantasy.
