Many were the races of Middle Earth, yet all were bound together by tragedy. The elves, fair and noble, bound to watch the world wither and go into winter, themselves fated to go into the west forevermore. The race of dwarves, great miners and craftsmen, exiled from their most ancient homes. And the race of Men, who of all things know anger, pain, and grief in full measure.
Yet among all these, the saddest were the smallest of all things, the hobbit-folk, gifted with great large eyes which could hold a wealth of grief, prone to mourning aught from the fall of a great army to having to put away the tea-things, in whose faces were mirrored all the sadnesses within the world.
