Dumb question, how do you tell whether you've slept well or poorly?

Sleeping well usually means:
* You fall asleep easily and tend to stay that way.
* If you wake up, you can get back to sleep in short order.
* You rarely have nightmares.
* In the morning you feel rested, wake up easily, and are comfortable.
Sleeping poorly means:
* You may have trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep.
* You're more likely to wake up at night and have trouble getting back to sleep.
* You're more likely to have nightmares.
* You have a hard time waking up, still feel tired, and may be stiff and sore.
