The characters have a patron. The patron's husband, wife, or parent is focused on actually running the fief, which leaves a very bored noble with money and time they can lavish on adventurers. The contributions to the party are impressive, but they aren't just dumping money on the PCs - they're all things like reshoeing horses, a place to stay, official letters allowing characters to stomp across borders to plunder dungeons, donations to the PCs' temple, criminal pardons, being allowed to keep most of the treasure. In return the patron basically wants the most culturally or historically significant finds as bragging rights. Enter the following scenarios;

  • the patron wants the PCs to show up in court or at a ball to show off the latest bit of significant foo they've recovered. The PCs must strike the right balance of "rough and ready adventurers" with "actually presentable around nobles."

  • just because the patron can hire mighty adventurers doesn't mean their own security's quite as good. After thinking they're done with an artifact for once and for all, the PCs have to retrieve it from a court rival who swiped the thing - and then find it's been stolen in turn by actual evildoers.

  • the obvious happens and the patron decides to go adventuring with the PCs. The patron is very conscious that they're not and adventurer, and will behave with a lot of common sense - but the characters are still basically there to make the patron look good good while protecting them.

  • the patron decides they're romantically interested in one of the PCs, which means they have a choice between potentially losing all their funding and potentially alienating the patron's parent or spouse.

  • the patron decides that they're going to tackle some other means of gaining prestige - underground duels, racing, public displays of magic - and it so happens they know a group of people who do that sort of thing all the time...

  • another faction at court has decided that rather than just being random hire-ons expanding the patron's reputation, the player characters are somehow vital confidants of their patron. Hilarity and assassination attempts ensue.
