I've been watching Van Helsing this evening because it's too cold and I'm too undermotivated to travel right now. Because there's snow and Mr. Hyde is sort of a Dickensian character it qualifies as a holiday film damnit.

Van Helsing is definitely a roleplaying game movie (hey, it has the trappings of someone's Ravenloft game!). There is ham-handed exposition, serious overacting, religious and historical details which are chosen purely because they seem cool, and pointlessly nonsensical but cool visual details. (Seriously, how does having a bicycling midget on the ceiling, or a big open vat of acid, further reanimation as a branch of steampunk science?)

This makes for two hours of really bad movie which I know damn well would be about six months of THE MOST AWESOMEST D&D PATHFINDER CAMPAIGN EVAR.

Presumably the acid is to stick whatever you are reanimating in case it tries to eat you.

I assumed that was the purpose of the saddle sword in an alcove in the original lab? The one Frankenstein uses to stab Dracula. Sort of a "break glass in emergency."
