Each primary ability is linked to a class - fighters are dependent on strength, wizards on intelligence, clerics on wisdom, rogues on dexterity, barbarians on constitution, sorcerers on charisma. There are a few weird subclasses which draw on combinations of abilities as what defines their magical whatevers - rangers are dexterity and constitution, paladins are strength and charisma, druids are wisdom and constitution, bards are dexterity and charisma, etc.
