I've done security work and after a while, you start alternating wanting nothing to happen (so you can finish your book, magazine or whatever) or you start wanting something to happen.

So; instead of putting police officers, a group with plenty of options for harshing people, and currently a bad track record for getting away with anything, where they at least get to be active to feel useful, the cops could be stationed at schools where they could be bored out of their collective minds, wanting something to happen, wanting something to happen to justify them being there instead of assigned to something more interesting. I would describe this as the most ideal way to get a lot of kids and possibly a few adults tasered, pepper-sprayed, and possibly shot.

Again, I don't feel I have an educated opinion about gun control, but generally dislike the idea. It just sounds too easy to use it as an excuse to go overboard with it, a little like the way it might be nice to have the airports more secure, but the TSA is not a good solution to whatever that problem is. (I hate to start sounding like the "BATF will come in the night to take all my guns!" because I'm particularly tired of that logic coming from gun types, but I do think there's room for a batch of really stupid, potential rights-trampling government malfeasance that you can get when you have a batch of people whose departmental funding or career advancement hinges on doing something dramatic, heroic, or apparently useful.)

Thus my attitude is something like "hey, yeah, having firearms this easily available sets us up for tragic, tragic problems but it's better than the problems we'd risk if we weren't very careful about the legalese we were going to put in place." And I'd be cool with that. But the NRA never says stuff like that. Instead, we hear how mere possession of a sidearm automatically grants individuals fine judgment and perfect marksmanship in places full of scared confused people. And now we hear how it's a great idea to mix kids with bored cops with little accountability who might feel under-appreciated.

Hoo boy.
