One of the Twitter feeds I follow are links to archaeological stories, so this morning I ran into the headline "King Richard's Inn Recreated by Archaeologists" and the related YouTube video.
While this is incredibly exciting stuff - how many Victorians made really careful drawings of the medieval stuff that was still standing in their era? - the dweebier part of me can't help but ask questions. Did they have a dartboard? Was the innkeeper a fat, balding former adventurer who kept a loaded crossbow under the counter? While Richard was staying there, was there a cloaked figure sitting in the corner glowering at all comers and dispensing quests?
And from there I realized that Macbeth starts out with a classic AD&D module opening. Instead of the wide range of things he could be doing, some really powerful NPCs show up and tell Macbeth what to do, and he runs off and does 'em (not without arguing with the other PC first).
Tis said that within the Yatil Mounts, south from Perrenlande, did the hagge queen Iggwilv secrete a treasure most great and potent that scores, e'en battalions of adventurers hath perished in the search thereof. Dost THOU have what it takes to plunder and despoil this most foul and secret trove? I say thee NAY!
Edit; oooh oooh ooh oooh. You know the book referenced in the YouTube link? You can find online scans of it here. Loads slowly.
