Okay, so "1999" by Prince was thematic in 1999. Life is uncertain. The much vaunted end of the world is right around the corner but hey! 2000 is tomorrow and the party's tonight. Pretty cool.
Well... it's my contention that thanks to an intervening brutal decade or so, the song's pretty appropriate again. Tomorrow you're going to wake up in 2012's recession, possibly jobless. Politics are going to be this mix of prominent religiousity with xenophobia and rich-get-richer schemes. The President who proposed public health care was accused of being a Nazi while outright racists are lionized. The police get worse, money gets scarcer, there are homeless kids all over the place, going back to school becomes harder, and providing affordable health care to women is this screamingly offensive upsetting thing. We just fought/are still fighting wars which didn't accomplish anything other than making a lot of PTSD, national debt and people who really resent the USA. Whether there's global warming, and whether that's anthropogenic is still up for debate somehow. And so on. But tonight none of that matters. Tonight we're going to party like it's 1999 and nobody's ever heard of that stuff.
