Lord of the Complaints
Jun. 2nd, 2011 10:24 pmOkay... so... I feel like venting this one again.
So you remember how in the movie Fellowship of the Ring, Arwen, as played by Liv Tyler, successfully protects the Ringbearer from some of the biggest badasses in Middle Earth? Well, in the book version that's Glorfindel, who's yet another one of these 30th level NPCs too busy to directly help the PCs. Apparently Glorfindel does show up in Return of the King in a cameo, but since he's not played by Tim Roth, the character is nowhere near as hot as Liv Tyler, and consequently I applaud Peter Jackson's decision to make Arwen more active in Fellowship.
In the books Arwen does remarkably little, and in Return of the King, right before the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, a batch of Aragorn's old Army buddies show up, including Elrond's kids Elladan and Elrohir, who present him with a banner that Arwen has made. I figured that would be a perfect opportunity for Arwen to show up again, volunteering to fight at Aragorn's side. That way the movies have more strong female protagonists while remaining close to the spirit of Tolkien's original, and I get to have more lurid fantasies about Liv Tyler with elf ears.
But nope. After Fellowship, Arwen's role is limited to Gothy pining away.
