A rash of billboards have gone up about the oncoming end of the world as guaranteed by The Bible, this coming May 21, a year earlier than the usual theory. Apparently there's been a rash of associated pamphlets too. The billboards feature a quote from the Book of Jonah, and if you've ever read that, the second half is basically about how God really didn't want to destroy Nineveh anyway, and lets them off the hook after a little bit of repentence, so I think that's their explanation for what happens if the world's still around on May 22.
The KFOG disk jockeys were talking about this earlier today. If it
did happen, what sort of music would go with a party for an onrushing apocalypse? Their picks were all things like "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)." Okay, but what would I pick?
- "Across the Universe."
- "Black Hole Sun."
- "Limo Wreck," also Soundgarden, same album, also apparently about the end of the world.
- Come to think of it, "Mailman" could also be about the end of the world, especially if you're going by Norse standards. It sure sounds like a very Loki-ish sort of song.
- As long as we're on Norse-inspired, either "Siegfried's Death and Funeral March" by Richard Wagner, otherwise known as the end of Excalibur...
- ... or "The Fire Dragon" by Jerry Goldsmith. If I have to face my death, I'd like to have a little bit of time to recite the Viking Death Prayer first.
- "I am the Highway," by Audioslave.
- "American Ghost Dance" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, is about pretty much the end of the world as it's already occured.
- "Mad World," by Tears for Fears, or as covered by Gary Jules, deserves to be in the apoca-mix for its association with a kinda sorta end of the world in Donnie Darko.
- "Jesus Don't Want Me for a Sunbeam," by The Vaselines and popularly covered by Nirvana, covers the religious end pretty nicely.
- "Dead Man's Party," by Oingo Boingo. It's vaguely appropriate to everyone being dead, and who doesn't like this?
- "Painkiller," by Judas Priest, which is pretty much the quintessential apocalyptic metal song.
- "Spoonman" is not, in fact, about the end of the world, but it's on "Superunknown," and ranks 'way up there with the Viking Death Prayer as things that need to be blasted at top volumes as the world falls apart.
So any nominees?
