The Good Folk - concepts by ~Pachycrocuta on deviantART
We went to the Pirate Festival in Vallejo, today. It wound up being a lot of money for us these days, all the gas and food and all - but it's worth it to get time with Es outside, now that she's healthier. The Cardiff Rose was there - they're a fencing booth at pretty much all the local fairs/Faires, and I got in some time fencing saber for the first time since Dickens Faire (back in December, also at the Cardiff Rose booth). My opponent was very competent (and very pretty), but we both thought I held my own okay (mostly-epee fencer versus completely out-of-practice fencer). Probably because saber is dramatic and unusual, we wound up in the front of the Rose's lot, and hopefully we put on a really good show for the curious as well as having a lot of fun for ourselves. It was good to go do that again.
It's a really fun little festival, but the heat and UV levels were brutal. After last week's events too, I've really been feeling like hauling along my drum (since there's nothing else I can play which would be portable) is the best way to go to events and be something more than just a spectator. I don't like the idea of festivals being more American consumer culture with garb, but actually working fairs is a level of involvement I don't think me or Es can manage right now.
