  • I've been listening to a lot of Foo Fighters lately and something I really like is how "Foo Fighters" started out as Dave Grohl's solo project, and it's pretty much a Nirvana album (it's what would've happened if Kurt hadn't died and instead wandered off to do acoustic, folky stuff like he talks about in interviews - Nirvana was definitely transient, no matter how it played out), but with the addition of more time and more people, the Foos basically are their own band. Which makes sense. Something interesting is that Nirvana must've been this really key, big chunk of time for Grohl, but there just aren't Nirvana songs with the same sort of defiant crankiness that makes "I'll Stick Around," "The Pretender," "Monkey Wrench," that stuff. I think this suggests 1) that Dave has always been a lot more confident and physically healthy than Kurt ever was and 2) Dave was a lot more influenced by punk than Kurt, who definitely liked punk, but had tastes all over the map.

  • I've been wondering whether the "hey we can force a government shut down or the overturn of the ACA" might have been more strategy than just the last ditch attempt to stop it. I'm wondering whether, with Obama's popularity sagging thanks to his handling of security and drone warfare issues, and the way the GOP saw die-hard Democrats going "fuck that noise" to Obama's attempt to get us into a war against Syria, they figured that this was a good time to go on the offensive.

I seriously hope this whole thing really backfires for the Republicans, but I'm from Georgia originally, so... I doubt it.
